Dance For People Living With Parkinson's - Workshop

Friday 31 January - 11:00am to 12:00pm

Research has shown that dance is particularly good for people living with Parkinson's as the movement and rhythm can help those parts of the brain affected by the condition. Physiotherapist and dance teacher Jackie Fowler is a dance for Parkinson's trained teacher working in Exeter. This one-hour class is for anyone living with Parkinson's and their partner, carer or friend. You do not need to have done any dance before. The class will begin with a seated warm up followed by a range of dance styles and you can either remain seated or stand.

Silver Swans Seated Ballet - Workshop

Ballroom Rhythms with Norma Daykin - Workshop

'This ballroom rhythms class will cover the fundaments of social dancing. It focuses on the basics of ballroom including holds, steps and movement round the floor in short figures that can be danced to a variety of rhythms. So if you've ever been curious about some of the beautiful ballroom dances that you've seen on TV now is your opportunity to discover the basics and find out if you want to explore them further. You are welcome to come along with a dance partner or on your own if you're happy to learn how to lead or follow.

Border Morris Dancing with Lin Steel- Workshop

This class is open to anyone aged 12 or over who would like to come and have a go at Morris dancing. Border Morris was originally a simple form of dance performed for money during winter months when work on the land was hard to come by. Now Border Morris groups wear eye-catching clothes and often perform at festivals throughout the year.  This is a lively and fast-moving dance, so be prepared to come along and have some fun.

Salsa - Workshop

Come and learn a Salsa Rueda! This lively dance, based on exciting Cuban rhythms, is a chance to learn basic salsa steps in a fun, sociable group activity. It is danced in a circle and dancers progress from partner to partner, guided by calls from the dance leader, Norma Daykin. You are welcome to come along with a dance partner or on your own to learn how to lead or follow. This dance has a strong community aspect as dancers work together to execute the moves.

Come and dance the night away with the fabulous ceilidh band, Banned from the Moor. Their wonderful caller, Jayne, will talk you through all the moves and you don’t need any prior experience to enjoy this toe-tapping extravaganza. Suitable for people of all ages you’ll be led through wonderful dances like the Dashing White Sargent, The Eightsome Reel and the famous Gay Gordons. Performance Parkour with Prodigal UPG - Workshop

This half-day workshop is for young people aged 13 to 24 of any ability who want to explore the principles of performance Parkour. The internationally award-winning Urban Playground Team bring their knowledge of movement, theatre and high-calibre teaching skills to enable young people to take dance in to new dimensions. By working with a scaffolding rig and incorporating parkour disciplines in to dance they explore how to tell both new and ancient stories. Parkour originated in Paris as a discipline of overcoming physical obstacles in an urban landscape. Join the Urban Playground Team to discover physical theatre with dance at its heart.

Beginners Adult Ballet Repertoire with Patricia Vallis - Workshop

Lindy Hop for Improvers with Strictly Come Dancing Choreographer Jenny Thomas - Workshop

This Lindy Hop class, delivered by Strictly Come Dancing choreographer Jenny Thomas, is an opportunity for experienced Lindy Hop dancers to learn a short routine that will extend their vocabulary and build on performance skills. Class participants need to attend with a partner.

With more than 35 years of professional dance experience, Jenny has performed with Wayne Sleep in 'Song & Dance', starred in 'SWING' on Broadway, was a guest performer at Sir Elton John's 60th birthday party and even danced in the Blockbuster Movie, The Polar Express with Tom Hanks.

Jenny is the leading Charleston and Salsa Choreographer on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, contributing to the show for 18 years. Some of her past memorable routines include Faye Tozer & Giovanni Pernice's 'The Lonely Goatherd' and Ed Ball's & Katya Jones' 'Gangnam Style' Salsa which was nominated for 'Must See TV moments' BAFTA Awards. Most recently Jenny was nominated for an OFFIE award for her choreography in 'Syncopation" at the Bridewell Theatre London. Ballet repertory for Improvers with Patricia Vallis - Workshop

Taking part in the regular challenges of a ballet barre and centre work brings the opportunity to build personal confidence and technique, but there’s nothing quite like combining your skills, confidence and technique together with grace and flow to dance some ballet repertoire. This 1.5 hour session is aimed at those with at least two years of ballet practice. You should be comfortable doing basic turns such as assemble soutenu en tournant or posé

 before signing up for this class. (If you haven’t reached this stage yet, try the repertory class for adult beginners instead.) No previous experience of doing rep is necessary as ex- professional dancer and choreographer Patricia Vallis will guide and support your exploration of an extract from Coppélia.

Lindy Hop for Beginners - Workshop

Lindy Hop is a social dance which originated amongst the African-American communities based in Harlem in the 1920s and is known as the original swing dance. Often danced to the wonderful Jazz music of the 1920s, '30s and '40's it offers opportunities for improvisation and self-expression which means it's perfect for solo as well as partner dancing. Swing Exe provide regular Lindy Hop classes and social dance opportunities in Exeter and will lead this beginners class ahead of our evening social dance at the Pavilions where the fabulous Hot House Combo will provide live music for a night to remember.

All aboard for a delightful train journey through India.

Experience the sights, sounds and smells evoked through South Asian dance, music and theatre; and meet some amazing characters along the way.

 Choogh choogh is a performance work inspired by the joy for travelling through India on a train. It combines classical Indian dance with contemporary movement, theatre and play, sharing with audiences a world full of colour, invention and flow. The journey starts with the audience getting a special choogh choogh ticket. Three artists weave a traveling tapestry with three scarves, morphing from one scene to the next as the sights, sounds and smells whiz by. The sound scape is rich with the sounds of the train, hawkers, festivals, musicians, ambient sounds of river, jungles and cities. The artists sing songs which are specially written for children – Chai Chai, Coffee Coffee and Kites Kites everywhere. They interact with the audience, engaging their imagination. This show is an exploration of just how much we can see and imagine, together, as the train chooghs chooghs on.

Contact improvisation with Feet off the Ground - Workshop

Robyn and Patricia will offer participants ways in which to explore new approaches to contact improvisation, expanding the possibilities of their dancing. Together we will:

-        Delve into the fundamental principles of the form, learning and experimenting with a range of technical skills in and around trust, weight-share, being off-balance, momentum, rolling points, lifting and flying.

-        Explore our relationship to the space around us and to one another; creating heightened awareness, which will allow us to dance together, be playful and experience a sense of freedom.

 Feet off the Ground creates transformative, relatable outdoor dance productions which comment on socio-political issues through a feminist lens. The work reflects the company’s collective belief in the therapeutic benefit of movement, human connection and touch, and their democratic and collaborative approach to creating and teaching dance.

 The collective have been delivering contact improvisation and partnering workshops for over a decade within the professional, education and community sectors both nationally and internationally. Feet off the Ground are proud to present an ensemble solely managed and performed by women.

Greek Circle Dance with Rosie Allen-Perdikeas - Workshop

Circular dancing is a common tradition across many cultures and is used for a variety of purposes including celebrations, ceremonies and as a social way to strengthen communities. Circle and line dance is an important part of Greek culture and thousands of dances exist with many regions in Greece having developed dance, music and costume that feature unique elements of local culture and the environment. The rhythms, beat and pattern of the steps can aid with flexibility and coordination, as well as bringing joy through social connection. Argentine Tango Vals - Workshop
